Need More Time

I guess this is part update, part rant, but I’m stuck in a place where I feel I never have enough time.  I know it’s because I am trying to do too much and that I really should cut something, but I can’t think of anything I want to cut out of my life right now, I can only think of things I want to keep adding (or adding back in).  So I really just need more time.

How to get more time?

That’s the problem.  I found a few solutions though, I’m searching for more time but these have helped.

1.) Cut out Time Wasters

For me this is reddit and youtube.  For you it might be television and video games, take a minute to think of the things you do that are not immediately relevant and cut them down.  You don’t have to stop watching TV but you can limit yourself to an hour a day (for example).  Fill the space between with the productive things you want to do.

2.) Decide what’s important

And cut out the rest.  This is one of those tips that sounds easy but is actually pretty hard.  It’s where I fail for sure, all the things I do are important to me.

3.) Sleep Less

Unhealthy, but it works.  Eight hours of sleep can be cut to five which gives you three more hours.  Not ideal but sometime sacrifice needs to be made.

4.) Turn ‘Breaks’ into productive time

I do most of my writing on my lunch break at work.  Nights are spent working out, updating this site and programming.  Mornings (when I manage to get up in time) are spent writing these posts.

Even with all that I still find myself struggling to find time.  I can cut out a bit more, but short of going back to surviving on Soylent there are only 24 hours in a day and I do need to rest for some of them.  I think I need to accept that sometimes there won’t be enough time and prioritize what is important.

Right now I’m working on becoming a self-taught full stack developer, building a short story as a choose your own adventure game, making chain-mail , making jewelry, writing a novel, learning C++, Java and Python, and keeping this site somewhat up to date.  Obviously some of those things don’t get worked on every day but I try.

At the end of the day, it’s all self-inflicted.  I don’t have to do any of these things.  I choose to do them because I enjoy them.  I choose to do them because I want to switch careers.  I could cut them all out and still be fine.  That’s the problem though,  I want to do these things, and I know they are good for me, but it can be hard to find the time.

I guess that makes it fun though, that makes it a challenge.  If it was easy it wouldn’t be worth doing.  I just hope that I’ll have something to show for it all.  It would suck to make all these sacrifices and end up in the same place I would be if I had just spent my free time relaxing.
