Changed Hosts

Changed Hosts

This will be a short post, partly because it’s to test that everything is still working and partly because I’ve spent too much time on this already.  For anyone that might have had issues viewing my site today I apologize, I was in the process of migrating to a new VPS host.  I left Digital Ocean and moved to Vultr mainly due to cost.  Digital Ocean has been a great service and they were reliable with a lot of added features that might have come in handy but which I don’t really see myself using.  Vultr is newer to the game but I have been impressed with them through the small offsite lab I’ve been running so I decided to migrate and save myself close to ten bucks a month.

I don’t want to bore you with the details of my hosting and other stuff.  If you encounter any weirdness on the site in the next few days please let me know, I anticipate I’ll be ironing out bugs for a while yet.  If anyone out there is looking for an affordable VPS take a minute to check out Vultr, I’m pretty happy with them so far.

Oats Studio: Some of the best Science Fiction I’ve seen in a while

Oats Studio: Some of the best Science Fiction I’ve seen in a while

In case you haven’t had a chance to see these shorts take a minute to check out these three amazing mini Science Fiction films from director Neill Blomkamp.  He’s the guy that directed District 9, Elysium and Chappie.  These shorts are his new project, working with big name actors on mini passion projects.  Each film takes place in a fully realized Science Fiction world and they are great examples of short films.  Each one could be made into an amazing feature film and leaves you wanting more while also feeling satisfied.  There are only three so far but there will be more to come.

Check out Oats Studios on YouTube.  Here are the shorts:

Games as Art: A Creative Outlet

Games as Art: A Creative Outlet

I’m one of those people that believes video games are a valid art form.  They are a blend of visual storytelling that interacts with the viewer (player) in a way no other medium can match.  While not all games are pieces of amazing artwork and not all games are that perfect blend of story, interaction and visual effect, a lot of games are.

Sure playing “Call of Duty”, or “Battlefield” is not the same as painting a picture or reading a book, but there are pliantly of games that I would class as art.  I’ve made this argument on my (now defunct) previous blog.  A piece where I talked about how games like “SOMA”, “Mass Effect”, “Spec Ops: the line” and “This War of Mine” were perfect examples of the medium as an art form.  The argument has been made before by people much more intelligent than me and people much better versed in this kind of discussion, so I won’t go too far into it. Remaining Focused

Remaining Focused

As anyone who reads my stuff may have noticed, it has been a while since I posted.  I’ve been pretty busy, lots going on and lots to do and that is where the heart of this post lies.  A problem I’ve had since I graduated university and got healthy and that is a problem of focus. Continue reading →

Made A Video, Don’t Know Why

Made A Video, Don’t Know Why

Maybe it’s a matter of thinking about weather or not I could do something instead of if I should do something, or just because I wanted a break from writing but I managed to upload a video.  Anyone who knows about self hosting will know that this is a kind of tricky thing, they will also know that this is kind of a bad idea (RIP bandwidth), but I wanted to give it a try.  This will probably be the only video I host here and I’ll probably delete it.  It was more of a test case than anything else, so please let me know how it works in the comments.
